book of aphorisms by a Pakistani lawyer

Death

  1. One is seldom tired of conversing about one’s illness. Fear of death is perversely fascinating.
  2. To be possessed by the idea of death is a morbid denial of life still to be lived happily.
  3. It is natural to hate death in old age. It is going to get you soon.
  4. It is a failing of human nature, universally indulged, that no mortal is in a hurry to meet his maker.
  5. Our humanity lies in the bond of dejection we share, that we shall all die.
  6. Comprehension is given to man to last for one lifetime. Eventually, senility sets in to make him mentally a vegetable, unless death intervenes sooner.
  7. There have always been a few who accept the dignity of the dismaying truth about the ultimate end into oblivion, in contrast to the alluring illusion of continuity in eternity.
  8. “0 Death where is thy sting.” It is in the longing for living.
  9. It is the keenness to hold on to life which is painful to give up in death.
  10. One day the sun will not rise tomorrow. There will be no past and no future, for present shall cease to be; the birds will not sing the sweet notes, nor fishes swim the seas; cold will seep through the earth and the fragrance of flowers will freeze; enchanting music and laughter of children will be heard no more and all life will come to an abrupt end. Silence will prevail on the deep, darkness will move over the waters and time will no longer be, because one day I shall die and leave this beautiful world and those whom I love shall part from me. Then the sun will not rise tomorrow for me .
  11. I hate death, I love life. I do not know what lies beyond death. Suppose, there is only darkness spread out to eternity; then I would not know. Would I ? But perhaps, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. How could anyone know.
  12. It is our cruel destiny to be annihilated by the mindless tyranny of nature. But we can assert our moral superiority of being and awareness by refusing to give in to the fear of death and by revering life in helping each other with compassion and by enjoying it, so long as it lasts.
  13. Knowing that we all share common destiny of transient life and suffer pain and sorrow, it is imperative that we must help each other in our humanity with compassion and without distinctions. We are sailing in the same ship oflife, cruising towards oblivion.
  14. There is no other way but to smile at the inconstancy of life in the dread of death.
