book of aphorisms by a Pakistani lawyer

Fanaticism

  1. Taliban were the orthodox literati who had taken wartime tenets of Islam as their peace-time core truth and were willing to die for their lopsided logic. Such is our strange and difficult age that the people kill and die for distorted ideas. This is also a recurrent theme in the gory history of mankind.
  2. We are living in the dark age of virulent intolerance practiced both by the perpetrators of terror and its victims in retaliation.
  3. In the history of mankind, more wars have been fought in Europe among the fanatics of different Christian creeds than among the followers of other religions anywhere else in the world.
  4. In the history of the world, the Christians of the Dark Ages of Europe engaged in the contemptible and savage practice to bum alive at the stakes hundreds of thousands of human beings, including poor old women as witches, in the name of their faith. Then the Spanish Conquistadors and migrant English, ransacked and wiped out Aztec and Inca civilizations of Mexico and Peru and native Indians ofAmerica in millions, as did the Australians with aborigines. The English took blacks, as slaves for America and Caribbean Sea; and deported their own people to Australia on the petty charges such as stealing a potato. In the 20th century, they fought four major wars and indulged in pogroms and holocaust of Jews to kill more than six million people. They are today the torch bearers of enlightenment, and Christian compassion of the so-called superior western civilization. 0 temporal O mores!
  5. The names of Genghis Khan, Hitler, Milosovich and Bush are blots on the face of humanity and will be remembered in the annals of history not as humbling reminders to refrain from indulging in what these fiends did in killing millions of people, but out of the perverse fascination for the horrible, a deplorable trait in human nature.
  6. Resentment is the last refuge of a fanatic in argument.
  7. The twenty first century Pope has proclaimed religious tolerance a virtue, something which was an anathema to Pope Urban of the eleventh century crusades fame. It takes a millennium for religious fanatics to mature.
  8. Religious fanatics look forward to the past.
  9. All knowledge suffers under the despotism of the ignorant and arrogant fanatics.
  10. A revolutionary idea begins as a liberating force and ends as an imprisnring creed, when it becomes obsolete, because no ideas remain constant in their pristine form, as human realities keep changing .
