book of aphorisms by a Pakistani lawyer

Technology

  1. Information technology is not knowledge, but a set of skills to increase coordinated speed and efficiency of activities.
  2. The world is fast becoming one technological society of computers and electronical gadgets in which the young will be imparted knowledge of information, and not of learning and values of life. Such society will be a monolith of power, bereft of creative emotion and imagination.
  3. Technology is the future shock of cultural change, making the old ways of living redundant without replacement by the new ethical watersheds.
  4. Technological progress is comfort without culture.
  5. Consumer economy created by technology is the bedrock of Western civilization and the obsession is now spreading all over the world in the name of progress.
  6. Science and technology have obliterated diseases. The world has now become a small and an easily accessible place, where, instead of the peace, harmony and brotherhood, discord, discontent and strife live in close proximity with the hubris, ignorance, and fanaticism, making this world a dangerous place to live in.
  7. One day, through genetic engineering, man will live by breed alive.
  8. If you are computer literate, you are considered educated in these days of craze for computers, even though you are sitting at the machine like a moron and following pre-set information and clicking away your time, letting the world pass by you.
  9. Human beings, in some future, will be designed mentally sharper, physically sturdier, and longer lasting, than we are, to compete with computers and robots for excellence.
  10. Posterity, in the distant future, will move the asteroids and moons. It is a matter of time, given the opportunity to survive nuclear annihilation.
  11. Cybernetics, automation, and other speed technologies, will create a quasi-esoteric world of virtual reality in which the actuality will become unprofitable. Human labour and sweat will ultimately be devalued.
  12. In future, life will not be a human right. With automation, global extension, and proliferation of advanced technologies, massive mergers, postponement in aging, and over-population, the great multitude of people will far exceed job requirements. Such a future will be a cruel and arrogant world without work for the unwanted.
  13. Information technology has made life seem easy with instant communication. But it is nothing more. It is not knowledge, as it is being deceptively touted for profit.
  14. The future is going to immerse us in images and information from technology without knowledge, a dismal future.
  15. Television has limited merit of instant and latest news. Otherwise, it is one dimensional and anti-social. Its dubious benefit is mitigation of loneliness and boredom. But it addicts one to forget family and friends, and to keep engrossed in the impersonal and sedentary world of unending, passive, and facile entertainment for the benefit of the multinationals to promote consumerism.
  16. Television humanizes trade by novel gimmicks of advertising, and demonizes man by making him a couch potato.
  17. Switch on the television and spoil the child.
